Professor Kazuya Nagasawa, Ph.D.
E-mail : ornatus(at)hiroshima-u.ac.jp
Kazuya Nagasawa is a fish parasitologist and fisheries biologist.
His academic background in Fisheries Science includes a PhD degree (fish
parasitology, 1981) and a Master's degree (fish parasitology, 1978) from
the University of Tokyo. He earned his Bacheror of Fisheries Science (aquaculture,
1975) at the Tokyo University of Fisheries (currently Tokyo University
of Marine Science and Technology). |

|
Dr. Nagasawa joined Hiroshima University in September 2005. He formerly
worked at the Hokkaido Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Station (1981-1991),
National Research Institute for Far Seas Fisheries (1991-2001), National
Research Institute for Aquaculture (2001-2003) and National Tohoku Fisheries
Research Institute (April to August in 2005). For two years from March
2003 to March 2005, he served as Special Adviser at the Aquaculture Department
of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC-AQD) in the
Philippines for an international project on fish diseases in Southeast
Asia.
As of October 2011, Professor Nagasawa authored and co-authored 27 books
(six as an editor, two as a single author, 19 as a chapter contributor)
related to fish parasites and also fisheries biology in both Japanese and
English publications. He also has over 210 original papers (of which, 167
papers were published in peer-reviewed journals), 53 review articles (22
in peer-reviewed journals) and 97 scientific essays.
Dr. Nagasawa has served in the editorial board for Journal of Marine Biological Association of the
United Kingdom (1992-present). Likewise, he served as Editor-in-Chief for International
Ichthyoparasitological Newsletter (1992-1996) and as an editorial member for Folia Parasitologica (1992-1996), Fish Pathology (1993-2004), Bulletin of Japanese Society of Fisheries Oceanography (1999-2002), and Fisheries Science (2005-2008).
In addition to parasitology, Dr. Nagasawa worked on fish ecology and
fisheries oceanography. He received the R.E. Foerster Award in Canada in
1998 with his work with a Canadian scientist on the impact of global warming
on the production of Pacific salmon. He was also awarded in 2001 by the
Japanese Association of Fisheries Journalists with his work on the ocean
ecology of Pacific salmon.
Dr. Nagasawa's expertise on fish parasites and others has led to several
invitations as a lecturer at the Ocean Research Institute of Kiel University,
Kiel, Germany (1989); the School of Marine Science, Tokai University, Shizuoka,
Japan (1992-1996); the Faculty of Science, Nara Women's University, Nara,
Japan (1995); and the Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo,
Japan (2009).
He also stayed as a visiting scientist at the Natural History Museum,
London, U.K.; Institute of Parasitology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech
Republic, Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic; Institute of Biological Sciences,
University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpul, Malaysia; Institute of Fisheries and

Professor Kazuya Nagasawa.
Ione is a Spanish. After she finished her undergraduate program at
the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), in California, U.S.A.,
she came to Japan as a Master's student. At CSULB, she was a student of
Professor Ju-shey Ho (left in the right picture below), a prominent scientist
for research on the symbiotic copepods of aquatic animals.
Ione is a postdoctoral fellow supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She has started publishing papers on the basis of her PhD dissertation.

4. The Species Studied
Various aspects of the biology of fish parasites, including the taxonomy, ecology and pathogenicity, are studied. The fishes
examined are mostly marine fishes from the Seto Inland Sea. Our current interest is also the fauna of parasites, such as copepods,
monogeneans and leeches, found on subtropical marine and freshwater fishes
in Okinawa, southernmost prefecture in Japan.
The impact of the parasites introduced with aquatic animals from other countries on freshwater ecosystems
in Japan has also been studied. The fishes studied are bluegill (Lepomis
macrochirus) and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). These fishes have been widely established in this country. The fauna
and distribution of their parasites are being investigated.
In addition to these species, Japanese eels
(Anguilla japonica) and river-resident amago salmon (Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae) are studied for their stock enhancement. Research on the sexual selection
of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) held at an aquarium is also conducted.
