学校の英語教育において、従来から文法の占める位置は大きい。最近では、単に文
の構造を理解させ、それを繰り返させるだけの指導に満足することはなく、function
や use の観点を考慮した言語使用のための文法指導が当然のものと考えられるように
なったきている。文法の指導法の面でも interactive な要素や game、problem-
solving 的な communication を志向した手法が導入され、文法指導は総合的な言語運
用の実現をめざしたものであるという自覚を伴った指導へと変化しつつある。そうし
た意味においても、英語を文レベルで生成させて満足していた時代から、英語教育の
果たすべき責任範囲が更に広がった感がする。言語活動を視野にいれた効率的な文法
指導が今後求められるようになるであろう。言語活動が重視され、Notional-
Functional Syllabus や Communicative Language Teaching の考え方の出現で、文法
の重要性が一時薄れたように思える時もあったが、最近ではまた、文法指導の重要性
が再び唱えられるようになった。文法のための文法教育ではなくて、Communicative
Grammar Teaching と呼ぶべき、言語活動のための文法指導という視点である。
文法と聞くとぞっとする生徒も多いのであるが、文法を「ことばを話したり文章を
書いたりする時に使用している言語的約束事項の体系」と考えると、文法の大切さが
よくわかる。その約束事項を知っておれば、言語によるコミュニケーションが最も効
果的に行われるのである。したがって、われわれ教師の役目は、当然のことではある
が、正しい文法知識を身につけ、それを生徒に教授することである。もしそうしない
ならば、生徒に正しく聞き・読み、正しく話し・書く能力を育成することは期待でき
ないと考えられる。

7月にわたって、私の準備した和文英訳の問題を、1時間に5〜10題ずつを実施してい
ただいたものである。ここに示した資料は、必ずしも同一のクラスからの資料ではな
く、たとえば問1〜問5まではある学校のある学年のAクラス、問11〜問15まではCク
ラスというように様々なクラスから資料を集めてある。これは、私の収集期限の問題
と教師の都合、および試験の連続では、生徒が真剣に答えなくなる点を考慮したもの
である。
収集した和文英訳の答案用紙を、生徒の解答の通りにスペリングや句読点の誤りも
そのままにパンチして計算機に入力し、ソート・集計した。パンチに際しては、細心
の注意を払ったが、生徒の誤ったスペリングを正しくパンチしたり、誤ったものをさ
らに誤ってパンチしたり、正しい解答を誤ってパンチした箇所があるかもしれない。
それらのミスはたとえあったとしてもほんの僅かであると思う。
本資料の作成に当たって、資料収集・提供を快諾くださった上記の先生方に深甚な
