What is Positive action?

Initiatives by Hiroshima University

 Hiroshima University plans to reach a goal of 11.5% ratio of women among its teaching staff by April 2010.
The following concrete measures were adopted to achieve this goal.

To mention enforcement of gender equality principle in documents on recruitment of teaching and research personnel

  In its decision of September 25, 2007, the Education and Research Council decreed that the following wording be inserted into the recruitment documents: "Women will be preferred among candidates with equal qualifications".

As its policy, the University endorses the two following measures (Education and Research Council. March 11, 2008)

 (1) Upon decision of Faculty meeting of corresponding Department, to preferentially appoint qualified women candidates on positions which originally are to be filled using the process of open recruitment.
 (2) In spheres where the system of education and research needs enhancing and improving, upon decision of Faculty meeting of corresponding Department, to preferentially appoint qualified women candidates on positions, for which remuneration is provided from the University President's discretionary budget (period-limited).

Setting up target values for ratio of women appointment for teaching staff positions

  Target values for ratio of women appointment for teaching staff positions were set up and officially adopted by the Education and Research Council on May 20, 2008.
