Course of Development Technology

In the Course of Development Technology, we conduct education and research related to (1) urban and transportation engineering, (2) energy science and technology, (3) risk management and technology, and (4) biological science and technology for environmentally sustainable development mainly in developing countries via international environmental cooperation from the interdisciplinary perspective.


The followings are the details of the labs in each field.

Field of Urban and Transportation Engineering

Based on regional and urban planning, transportation engineering, and civil engineering and so on, the staff in this field conduct education and research related to various urban and transportation technologies for realizing environmentally sustainable development.


Zhang’s Lab (Lab of Mobilities and Urban Policy)

From the viewpoint of mobilities and urban policy, research topics in this lab cover various urban, transportation, environment and energy, and tourism issues, especially focusing on the development of methodologies (e.g., surveys, modeling, policy evaluation and planning) and applications of the methodologies in both developed and developing countries based on interdisciplinary approaches. "Regional and Urban Engineering" and "Tourism Policy" are major lectures given by this lab.

Fujiwara’s Lab (Lab of Transportation Engineering)

Based on the theory of transportation engineering, this lab conducts a wide range of studies on sustainable transport, including development of advanced technologies and their social implementation, methodological development of transport planning and policies. "Transportation Engineering" and "Transportation Planning" are major lectures given by this lab, in cooperation with international academic and practical societies and organizations.

Field of Energy Science and Technology

Based on coastal and ocean engineering, and architecture and so on, the staff in this field conduct education and research related to various energy technologies for realizing environmentally sustainable development.


Kubota’s Lab (Laboratory of Building and Urban Environmental Science in Asia: BUESA)

The main research focus of BUESA is on energy-saving technologies for buildings and cities, particularly in hot-humid climates of Southeast Asia. In Asia, one of the uniqueness can be seen in terms of ‘diversity’. The goal of this lab is to accumulate the ‘Asian wisdoms’ for achieving the energy-saving objectives through sharing the diverse environments and circumstances from different Asian countries. "Sustainable Architecture I" and "Sustainable Architecture II" are major education subjects provided by this lab.

Nishina’s Lab (Laboratory of Architectural Environment)

Nowadays, reduction of the energy consumption has been an urgent task, especially after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The research of this lab focuses on the means of improving energy efficiency in the building equipment system such as air conditioning and hot water supply. In addition, energy saving by utilization of sustainable energy is also targeted. Furthermore, this lab deals with indoor thermal environment and behavior of residents. Approaches from the social and psychological aspects are often applied. The major education subject provided by this lab is "Environmental Planning".

Higo's Lab (Ocean Development Laboratory)

From the viewpoint of ocean utilization, the topics on the ocean energy utilization (e.g., development of wave power generation or ocean wind power generation) and the ocean space utilization are studied by making use of hydrodynamic approach in this lab. When marine structures are constructed in the ocean, environmental external forces due to wind, waves and current are acting on the structures. For the structure safety, the methodologies to estimate those environmental forces are developed. "Marine Hydrodynamics" is the major lecture given by this lab.

Lee’s Lab (Coastal Hazards and Energy System Science Laboratory: CHESS)

CHESS Lab researches are focusing on understanding of the physical processes and the interactions of elements such as atmosphere, wave, ocean, and so on in natural hazards and coastal disasters, and further on evaluating and predicting those hazards and disasters, by using numerical models for atmosphere, waves, and ocean. We are also interested in the potential impacts of long-term variability of disaster forcing such as typhoons activity and sea level rise on coastal environment. We are also carrying out studies on assessment of renewable energy resources and estimation of future changes of the resources by regional climate modeling for sustainable energy supply strategies in developing Asian regions. "Energy Science and Technology" is the major education subject provided by this lab.

Based on civil engineering, soil engineering and so on, the staff in this field conduct education and research related to risk management and technology for realizing environmentally sustainable development.


Chikaraishi's Lab (Infrastructure and Risk Management Laboratory)

The Infrastructure and Risk Management Laboratory deals with analysis, modeling, and evaluation of various risks related to environmental issues, population decline, natural disasters, accidents, and poverty, etc. for the development of sustainable infrastructure systems in both developed and developing countries. "Fundamentals of Survey Methodology" and "Risk Management Technology" are major lectures given by this lab.

Yamamoto’s Lab (Geotechnical Disaster Prevention Laboratory)

There are various types of ground disasters such as landslide, slope failure, settlements, side flow and so on due to earthquake or heavy rain. The main research subject of this lab is the incidence mechanisms of ground disasters for developing disaster prevention and countermeasure construction methods. Accordingly, research topics related to basic Geotechnique, Soil mechanics, Foundation engineering, Failure mechanics of soils and Environmental protection of ground are emphasized. "Ground Disaster Prevention Engineering I" and "Ground Disaster Prevention Engineering II” are major education subjects given by this lab.

Field of Biological Science and Technology

Based on ecology, genetics, crop science, and animal husbandry and so on, the staff in this field conduct education and research related to various technologies for realizing environmentally sustainable development from the perspective of biological science and technology.


Igawa’s Lab (Evolutionary and Ecological Genetics Laboratory)

Ecosystem is an essential component for sustainability of human kind. To pursue the organization processes of the system from perspective of biological evolution, this lab not only conducts various basic researches based on molecular evolution and population genetics, but also develops environment monitoring methods and molecular markers which are effective to ecological conservation as well.

Xuan’s Lab (Plant Physiology and Biochemistry Laboratory)

Climate change and pathogen infestation have caused severe impacts on crop production. This lab conducts researches on identifying, isolating, and determining the chemical structures of secondary metabolites from crops using modern analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, IR and NMR, as well as clarifying the physiological roles of these compounds relevant to these abiotic and biotic stresses. Furthermore, novel mutation techniques are applied to breed new varieties of “super crops” in a much shorter cropping, and identification of a novel gene linkage which can accumulate excellent genes of crops in a target cultivar by conventional breeding is also conducted.

In this lab, the following researchers are mainly conducted: QTL analysis for economic traits of chickens, phylogenetic analysis for chicken breeds, analysis for mutations in chickens and quail, and preservation of bio-resources in chickens and quail.

Maeda’s Lab (Food Security Laboratory)

This lab deals with various studies on artificial manipulations of germ cells, and biochemical and molecular analyses of maturation, ovulation and fertilization of oocytes, aiming at the improvement and preservation of livestock resources.

Dr. Toshiaki Kondo, Specially Appointed Assoc. Prof.

Because of strong socio-economic dependency on natural resources and lenient management schemes or poorly designed land-use guidelines, ongoing degradation of ecosystems, which provide goods and services for human society, continues to be a serious global problem. I focuse researches on conservation and sustainable management of ecosystems at multiple scales from gene to landscape, based on field work, GIS spatial analysis, and genetic analysis.
