The Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences consists of a single division and a single major in order to purse a program of interdisciplinary and comprehensive research that transcends traditional fields of specialization.

 
Integration and Collaboration
 The graduate school is comprised of a single division and a single course of study. In this century, the human race as a whole is confronted with a large number of complex problems. In order to tackle them, it is crucial that educational and research staff from a variety of specializations share a common vision which transcends the traditional disciplinary boundaries such as physical science and human science through collaboration with scholars and experts in different fields of specialization.
A Paradigm Shift through the Integration of Various Specialized Fields
 In order to catch up with the tide of rapidly changing information and its knowledge base, we proceed with a bold paradigm shift in specialized fields by integrating fragmented academic disciplines into a single, comprehensive course of study.

★Curriculum Encompassing Different Departments, Areas, and Fields of Studies.

 All of the students admitted to the Graduate School are required to take core subjects, as well as the subjects which help them acquire interdisciplinary and comprehensive ways of thinking and skills beyond the boundaries of departments, areas, and specialized fields. The curricula make it possible for students to understand the value of becoming what we have termed “focused generalists” in their respective fields of study.

 
Core Courses
 A series of lectures are given on specific issues across the boundaries of the three departments: namely, the Department of Human Sciences, the Department of Environmental Studies, and the Department of Cultural Sciences. Core subjects are also offered to the students across the three departments to which they belong so that the students can acquire the essence of the intellectual technique known as “integrated arts and sciences.”
Required Subjects
 The Seminar on Integrated Arts and Sciences is a required subject which helps students acquire interdisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge and skills, methodologies in their focused field of specialization, and the ability to deal with their Individualized Research (tokubetsu-kenkyu) in the Master’s Course. The goals of Research Seminars (kennkyu-enshu) in the Doctor’s Course aim at expanding the knowledge of the specialized fields of study.
Omnibus-style Class Procedure
We seek to educate students to become focused generalists. For that purpose, more than one professor jointly teach a number of courses offered at the Graduate School. Each course has its specific goal set jointly by the professors in charge. The course proceeds efficiently and effectively thanks to their planning and close collaboration.
Focused Fields of Specialization
 The prerequisite for becoming a focused generalist is to expand the knowledge of one’s major field of specialization. When you apply to the Graduate School for admission, you are requested to specify your choice of departments and the areas of specialization.
 After admission, you must take 8 or more credits of semi-required courses in your major area of specialization.
Semi-required Subjects in Departments and Areas Outside Your Own Areas of Specialization
 Students are required to take two or more credits in other departments, as well as two or more credits, as semi-required subjects, in areas outside the areas of specialization. Students will acquire an interdisciplinary and comprehensive point of view which is necessary to objectively evaluate the stock of knowledge they have acquired in their focused fields of specialization.

★ Respond Accordingly and Flexibly to the Diverse Needs of Students

A multitude of experts and researchers from various fields respond accordingly and flexibly to the diverse needs of students.

 
Plural Supervising System
 Through an intensive orientation camp and adequate guidance, a main supervisor and two or more sub-supervisors are chosen for each student, with due consideration to the student’s wish. At least one of the sub-supervisors joins the team from other areas of specialization and acts as a liaison between the areas.
Special Selection for Mature Students in Employment and the Phoenix Program
 The door of the Graduate School is wide-open to anyone in employment who desires to be a focused generalist and to upgrade his/her career.
 Special measures will be taken to flexibly map out a class timetable to meet the work schedule of individual students.
 The Phoenix Program is intended for those who are 55 or over and are willing to pursue academic interests further. After admission, students can chose between a longer-term curriculum and a shorter-term curriculum instead of the regular one, if necessary.
School Affairs Committee
 The School Affairs Committee provides academic assistance to individual students and gives them advice on how to take courses.
Admission Via the Recommendation System & Special Quotas for International Students
 Admission via a recommendation system will be introduced from the 2007 academic year. A special quota for international students will also be introduced in the same year. The screening of applicants will be conducted based on the academic grades and accomplishments of the students at the undergraduate level in their home countries.



★Participatory Project Curriculum

 Students can get a degree by participating in any project initiated by the Graduate School. Research activities of the projects are designed in such a way that they serve as an educational function in which the teaching staff and students jointly participate.

 
Independently Organized Curriculum
 The students who belong to “the 21st Century Science Project Group” also can get a degree. In consultation with their main supervisor, the students of the Project Group in the Master’s Program organize their curriculum on their own except for the Seminar on Integrated Arts and Sciences, Individualized Research (tokubetsu-kenkyu) and Common Core courses.
Support System
 The Committee on the 21st Century Science Project plays a central role in designing and planning the educational and research activities of the projects concerned. Except for the Liberal Arts Education & Research Development Project, each project must be terminated within 5 years from the start. Even after the termination of a given project, the main supervisor who participated in the project with the students, as well as the Committee, will help them earn their degrees
