■ The Characteristics of the Graduates of Integrated Arts and Sciences

In modern society, information, technology, and knowledge available are quickly renewed every day. Against this backdrop, the knowledge of a narrow field of academic discipline is not sufficient for anyone to survive. People who can break down the barriers of existing fields of study and can cope flexibly with the daily changes of information, technology, and knowledge are in great demand.
The person who developed the i-mode, also known as a cell phone terminal, was a graduate of the humanities. This fact provides evidence that a person who can break down the barriers of existing fields of study, and who can work assiduously toward his or her goal, can accomplish breakthroughs in advanced technology. Fostering what we have termed “focused generalists” is the purpose of the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences.
