The 1st Shiraishi Lab excursion @Hiroshima and Shimane
(Mar. 19-20, 2023)

As the pandemic has subsided, we decided to conduct tours to enhance our geological insight and deepen friendships among the Lab members. The first tour was a two-day, one-night trip to Hiroshima and Shimane. The photo shows the Bihoku Group in Shobara and the bone fossils contained within it.
Next, we observed the turbidites and columnar joints found on the Susuumi coast.
We had a BBQ at the inn that night, and the next morning we went to Oda Beach to search for shell fossils and other things.
Next, we visited Iwami Silver Mine.
Finally, we observed the calcareous concretions at Tatamigaura, some of which contained fossilized bones believed to be from whales.
