Shiraishi conducted a preliminary
investigation of travertine for joint
research with Pamukkale University in
Turkey. First, Shiraishi traveled to Denizli
via Istanbul. |

Investigating the travertines of Pamukkale.
They are pure white and spectacular. |
Just above the Pamukkale travertine is the
Roman ruins of Hierapolis, whose stone is
fossil travertine. |
There is also travertine in Karahayit, the
town next to Pamukkale, but it is yellowish
due to the iron content. However, when I
visited, the hot spring water had dried up. |
We also investigated the Tekkehaman
geothermal field, located about 25 km west
of Pamukkale. Here, there is a large amount
of spherical limestone, similar to that seen
in Shirahone Hot Spring. |

Finally, we investigated the tower-shaped
travertine in the Hisaralan geothermal
field. We were interviewed by Turkish media
and it has been reported in many online news
outlets. If you are interested, search for
"shiraishi hisaralan". |
