| Shiraishi conducted a preliminary investigation of travertine for joint research with Pamukkale University in Turkey. First, Shiraishi traveled to Denizli via Istanbul. | |

| Just above the Pamukkale travertine is the Roman ruins of Hierapolis, whose stone is fossil travertine. | |

| There is also travertine in Karahayit, the town next to Pamukkale, but it is yellowish due to the iron content. However, when I visited, the hot spring water had dried up. | |

| We also investigated the Tekkehaman geothermal field, located about 25 km west of Pamukkale. Here, there is a large amount of spherical limestone, similar to that seen in Shirahone Hot Spring. | |
