In our lab, research has been done with respect to not only traffic engineering and transportation planning, but also urban planning, environmental management, and tourism policies, based on the understanding of behavioral mechanisms of human, organizations and society. Research topics cover the issues not only in Japan and other developed countries, but also in developing countries. And, the inter-disciplinary research methods (e.g., economy, psychology, and sociology) are strongly recommended and have been widely applied and developed.

Studies about urban and transportation systems include design of low-carbon urban and transportation systems, activity-travel behavior surveys and modeling, integrated urban and transportation modeling, ITS (intelligent transport systems), TDM (travel demand management), road pricing, traffic safety, public transportation systems, universal mobility studies, quality of life and subjective wellbeing, pedestrian behavior survey and modeling at city center for urban revitalization, valuation of travel time savings, quality of urban services, mobility issues of elderly people in depopulated areas and demand responsive transit system, and cross-sector planning and policy decision methods, etc.

To strengthen the research of traffic safety and its surrounding fields, in 2008, we established a new research center, called Center of Asian Safe Mobility Research (ASMO Center) in Hiroshima University, together with other researchers and practitioners (see: http://www.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/asmo/). The ASMO Center aims to open up another interdisciplinary and international research stream in the context of Asian sustainable mobility.

Environmental studies mainly deals with automobile ownership and use, household energy consumption and lifestyle, environmental monitoring and air quality, indicator development for sustainability, methodologies for environmental management and governance, etc.

Tourism studies focus on tourist behavior analysis (tourism generation, destination and travel party choice, travel mode and route choice, activity participation, time use and consumption behavior, integrated modeling), tourism information provision and activity scheduling, international tourism on the Asian highways, tourism and transportation planning, and cross-country comparative studies about group package tour.

Examples of the topics related to developing countries include sustainable household life from the perspective of energy consumption, formalizing informal transportation systems (especially paratransit systems) from the perspectives of both stable employment and sustainable mobility, motorcycle safety, effects of dynamic travel information on relaxing traffic congestion, travel behavior analysis using person-trip survey data conducted by JICA, exploring sustainable urban forms and transportation systems in developing cities based on stated preference approaches, development of integrated models for sustainable urban and transportation systems, and exploring behavioral changes for environmentally sustainable transport (EST).

Up to now, we have published several hundreds of academic papers. Our studies were awarded as best papers and outstanding papers more than ten times by international and domestic conferences, associations and institutes.
