Here Herodotus declares that the purpose of this book is not to have the great deeds and the cause of the conflict between Persians and Greeks forgotten in the course of time. Similarly, we need history of earthquakes badly for the sake of our own welfare. Our historic record as well as those excavated from under the ground should carefully be examined for correctness and precision.
