Install GMT on Windows 98/Me/XP


Carefully extract files and folders into proper subdirectories!
Make sure to set apporpriate paths in gmtenv.bat or autoexec.bat!

(Paths let the system locate GMT programs and data. If it's correctly set, GMT commands are executed from all subdirectories in the PC.)
See the very basics of UNIX and MS-DOS, if you are not familiar with them.


0. Change view setting
Turn off Web-page view.
Show all files and folders.
Show all extensions.
Use detailed view [list].
Enable to show as many windws as you like.

1. Download following files from GMT ftp site.

GMT_progs.zip
GMT_high.zip (optional)

GMT_web.zip
GMT_tut.zip
GMT_suppl_exe.zip

README.GMT
netcdf-3.5.0.win32bin.zip
(Optional files are detailed world coastline data.)

2. Download following utitlity files
Postscript viewer [ghosgscript]
gs704w32.exe
gsv42w32.exe
Archiver [WinZip]
winzip81.exe
Multifunction text editer [Hidemaru]
maruo315.exe
UNIX environment [Cygnus solution: optional]
Cygwin
UNIX style text editor
ssed.exe

3. Install utility files

4. Install GMT
1. Double-click GMT_exe.zip
2. In WinZip window: Action > Select all
3. In WinZip window: Extract
4. In Extract Box: Extract to c:\
5. Check C: drive to find a Gmt folder
6. Do the same for all zip files beginning with 'GMT'
7. File Overwirte Confirmation: Yes to ALL
8. Do the same for gawk303x.zip

Indispensable subdirectories and their paths are as follows.
In case you have different structure, redo installation or modify it manually.

c:\gmt\bin\ (There is a 'bin' filder inside 'gmt' folder.)

5. Install Netcdf
1. Double-click netcdf-3.5.0.win32bin.zip
2. In WinZip window: Action > Select all
3. In WinZip window: Extract
4. In Extract Box: Create new folder switch-Name: netcdf (all lower case)
5. Extract to: C:\NETCDF Extract

The subdirectories and their paths for netcdf are as follows.
In case you have different structure, redo installation or modify it manually.

c:\netcdf\lib\

6. Set up
1. Rename the folder "Gmt" to "gmt341" in c:\
2. Open c:\gmt341\README.WIN32 [Drag the icon onto Maruo icon on desktop.] and read it carefully.
3. Win95/98/Me: Copy c:\gmt341\src\gmtenv.bat and paste to c:\gmt341 windows.
4. Opne c:\gmt341\share\gmtconf by dragging to Maruo.
5. Change first two characters to "SI", save and close.
6. Copy c:\gnu\bin\gawk-djg.exe to c:\gmt341

7. Start GMT
1. Start > Programs > MS-DOS
2. C:\windows> is a prompt. Type cd \gmt341 then enter.
3. C:\gmt341> gmtenv then enter. GMT environment initialized.
3. C:\gmt341> pscoast then enter.
4. A list of options is displyed. READY to use.
5. C:\gmt> gmtset PAPER_MEDIA a4+

8. Project maps
1. Create PS file using GMT commands. Extension is .ps.
2. View the PS files: Start>Programs>ghostgum>GSView4.2
3. Open .ps files in c:\gmt341

9. Trouble !?
1. "netcdf.dll is not found."
Copy C:\NETCDF\bin\netcdf.dll and paste to C:\NETCDF and C:\NETCDF\lib
