Why Are N2 and O2 Unreactive?


Experimental heats of formation and enthalpies obtained from G4 calculations both find that the resonance stabilization of the two unpaired electrons in triplet O2, relative to the unpaired electrons in two hydroxyl radicals, amounts to 100 kcal/mol. The origin of this huge stabilization energy is described within the contexts of both molecular orbital (MO) and valence-bond (VB) theory. Although O2 is a triplet diradical, the thermodynamic unfavorability of both its hydrogen atom abstraction and oligomerization reactions can be attributed to its very large resonance stabilization energy. The unreactivity of O2 toward both these modes of self-destruction maintains its abundance in the ecosphere and thus its availability to support aerobic life. However, despite the resonance stabilization of the π system of triplet O2, the weakness of the O−O σ bond makes reactions of O2, which eventually lead to cleavage of this bond, very favorable thermodynamically.

London Dispersion Effects in Molecular Chemistry – Reconsidering Steric Effects


The Gecko can walk up a glass window because of the adhesion in hydrophobic setae on its toes that convey van der Waals (vdW) interactions with the surface. The attractive part of such vdW-interactions is an electron correlation effect referred to as London dispersion. Its role in the formation of condensed matter has been known since the work of van der Waals and London who related dispersion to polarizability. London dispersion has been underappreciated in molecular chemistry as a key element of structural stability, chemical reactivity, and catalysis. This negligence is due to the notion that dispersion is weak, which is only true for one pair of interacting atoms. For increasingly larger structures, the overall dispersion contribution grows rapidly and can amount to tens of kcal mol–1. This presentation shows selected examples that emphasize the importance of inter- and intramolecular dispersion for molecules consisting mostly of first row atoms. We note the synergy of experiment and theory that now has reached a stage where dispersion effects can be examined in fine detail. This forces us to re-consider our perception of steric hindrance and stereoelectronic effects, and even the transferability of chemical bond parameters from one molecule to another.

Metallocorroles for Photocatalysis


Despite of the similarity to porphyrins, focus on the photophysical properties of corroles and their chelates with transition and post-transition metal ions (metallocorroles) started quite late. The most outstanding features appear to be very intense fluorescence (up to twice that of chlorophyll and the ease by which the properties may be tuned by facile synthetic manipulations. Metallocorroles may be designed as to display delayed fluorescence, RT phosphorescence, two-photon absorption, and more. The practical utility of metallocorroles has been exemplified by their use as catalysts for photo-assisted organic reactions, energy-relevant inorganic transformations, photodynamic therapy for fighting cancer, and photodynamic inactivation of microorganisms. Key to success in the above applications is the ability to delicately control the photophysical properties, redox potentials, and the selective positioning of substituents on the macrocycle.

Asymmetric Catalysis with Modularly Designed Organocatalysts


Modularly designed organocatalysts (MDOs) are organocatalysts that are self-assembled in the reaction medium directly from properly designed precatalyst modules. The structures of these catalysts are easy to modify and a library of catalysts can be created by simple permutations of the precatalyst modules without any synthetic step.  I this presentation, we will demonstrate that MDOs are excellent catalysts for many organic reactions. Most significantly, with properly designed systems, diastereodivergent catalysis can also be readily achieved by using MDOs.

Biomimetic Radical Chemistry


Free radical production in biological systems is the subject of a very lively scientific debate, focusing on type and extent of damages, as well as on the efficiency of protective and repair systems. Molecular mechanisms and targets of reactive radical species can be studied using biomimetic models, which allow the experiments to be performed in a simplified environment, but suitably designed to be in strict relationship with cellular conditions. By this approach, free radical processes such as lipid isomerization in cell membranes, cyclopurines formation in DNA, and protein desulfurization have been studied in our laboratory, finalizing this research toward biomarker discovery. Ongoing projects will be described with some examples.
