Saori KASHIMA, Ph.D. (Environmental Science)

Associate Professor at Hiroshima University. I joined Hiroshima University in 2010 as an Assistant Professor, and since 2022 I have been acting as the Director of the Center for Planetary Health and Innovation Science (PHIS), the IDEC INSTITUE. My research interests are in environmental epidemiological studies in air pollution, environmental health and global health. Furthermore, I have now launched a transdisciplinary project related to community-oriented practices in healthy ageing with planetary health.

Environmental Epidemiology

We conduct epidemiological studies focusing on environmental health problems. By using epidemiological methods, we attempt to quantitatively evaluate the causal relationship between environmental factors and health effects. We are especially focusing on the transboundary air pollution issues and the health effects of chemical substances.

Epidemiological Study on Community Health and Global Health

We evaluate the impacts of changing the distribution of social resources on health. Specifically, we use a geographic information system (GIS) to measure accessibility to medical facilities and conduct research on its relevance to various health indicators.
