Seminar and Conferences

Seminar on Rural Development (2 Credit Hours for Master’s student and 4 Credit Hours for PhD student) course is offered by Professor Maharjan.

There are presently two Ph.D. students and ten Master’s student in Professor Maharjan’s seminar. They come from various

countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi and the Philippines with different academic and social backgrounds. Students enrolled in the Ph.D. course and even in Master’s course; often have MA degree from other universities and working experiences in their respective government offices, universities and other different organizations, which adds an international dimension to the issues discussed in the seminar. Some of the development issues being researched by the current students include study of agricultural and micro credit, organic farming,  indigenous knowledge and practices on climate change adaptation, rural livelihood, marketing of vegetables and value chain issues, agricultural cooperatives, farming field school and food security, among others.

In the weekly seminar, a student presents research work pertaining to his/her thesis which is followed by a discussion period. The professors and graduate students of other lectures and graduate schools, with interests in the related subjects, join the seminar as well. All the participants of the seminar are given chances to speak on the topic and in depth discussions

One thing that can be said to be common to all the participants is that they all try to contribute in the field of international development and cooperation by tackling the problems of climate change, livelihood and food security. By deepening the understandings of different systems and societies, Maharjan’s students try to find methods of maximizing the use of local resources in a sustainable manner through self-help efforts.
