Prof. Zhang got a bachelor’s degree from Beijing Jiaotong University, China in 1987, a master’s degree, and a doctorate degree from Hiroshima University, Japan in 1993 and 1996, respectively. Since he got his doctoral degree, he experienced working as a research associate at Hiroshima University, a consultant in the urban and transportation field in Tokyo, and a research fellow (postdoctoral researcher) at the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. His research fields include urban and regional planning, transportation planning, traffic engineering, environment and energy policies, tourism policy, and health policy in the contexts of both developed and developing countries. He has developed various methodologies (surveys, modeling, policy evaluation, and planning, etc.) and applied them to analyze various issues related to the above fields from an interdisciplinary perspective, especially focusing on human behavior analysis and systematic approaches. In recent years, he has been especially promoting the life-oriented approach for cross-sectoral policies. He has published 490+ refereed academic papers (112 SCI/SSCI papers) in journals such as Transportation Research Part A/B/C/D/E, Journal of Transport Geography, Transportation, Transportmetrica, Tourism Management, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Energy Policy, Energy, Climate Change, Natural Hazards, and Environment and Planning B. He further published about 400 non-refereed papers. His research was awarded as Best Paper Prizes (8) and Outstanding Paper Awards (4) for 12 times by international conferences and journals. He has been serving as a reviewer for 50+ SCI/SSCI journals and as an editorial board member or associate editor for 10+ internationally well-recognized journals. He was the chair of the IATBR Eric I. Pas Prize Selection Committee in 2013. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal “Asian Transport Studies (ATS)” of EASTS (Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies), which is the largest transportation association in the Asian and Pacific region, in 2011-2016, and a board member of the International Association for Travel Behaviour Research (IATBR). Currently, he is the co-chair of WCTRS COVID-19 Task Force (from 2020-present). Since February 2021, he is a member of The Engineering Academy of Japan.

Research 研究
(1) Major Research Fields
Urban and Regional Planning, Transportation Planning and Engineering, Environmental and Energy Policy, Tourism Policy, Health and Pandemics, Human Behavior Research
(2) Summary of Research Achievements
Focusing on urban, transportation, environment, energy, and tourism issues, my research deals with regional and urban planning, transportation planning and engineering, sustainable development policy, and other relevant fields from an interdisciplinary perspective in the context of both developed and developing countries. I have done my research related to Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, The Netherlands, Germany, and United States, etc. My research emphasizes life-oriented and systematic approaches. As of February 2021, I published 460+ refereed academic papers (SCI/SSCI: 100+). From 2002 when I moved to the current university, I increased the number of my refereed papers by more than 15 times. My research was awarded 12 times as Best/Outstanding Paper Awards by international and Japanese academic associations.
Major journals of my publications include Transportation Research Part A/B/C/D/E; Transport Policy; Accident Analysis and Prevention; Safety Science; Journal of Transport Geography; Transportation; Sustainable Cities and Society; Environmental Planning B; Energy; Energy Policy; Climate Change; Natural Hazards; Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment; Tourism Management; Annals of Tourism Research; Journal of Sustainable Tourism; Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research; Public Health; Geriatrics & Gerontology International; International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health; Journal of Advanced Transportation; Journal of Transportation Engineering; Journal of Transport and Land Use; Transportation Research Record; Transportmetrica, etc.
I am especially good at collaborating with researchers from different disciplines. To date, I have been working with researchers from various disciplines (e.g., economics, health science, environmental science, ecosystem, architecture, urban planning, transportation planning, human geography, tourism, culture, education, sociology, and psychology). The life-oriented approach is one of the most successful outputs of such interdisciplinary efforts and it is also the most significant contribution to literature in my research.
To date, I have won research funds with more than 1.0 billion Japanese Yen, as the principal researcher, including two Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS: 2010-2014 (No. 22246068); 2015-2019 (No. 15H02271)), where the life-oriented approach is positioned as a core methodology. For my graduate school, I have devoted myself to win several large-scale education and research programs with more than 4.0 billion Japanese Yen. Especially, I served as the leader of a sub-program “Urban System Design to Prevent Global Warming” in the Global Environmental Leaders Education Program for Designing a Low-Carbon World funded by the MEXT Special Coordination Funds (2008-2012; 466,100,000 Yen).
