• 2017.04.10: The new term just started. Welcome newcomers!
  The new term just started. From this new term, the following members joined our lab. Warmly welcome!

(1) Dr. Wenyuan WANG, an associate professor, from Dalian University of Technology revisited our lab as a visiting scholar. She will stay until the end of March 2017.

(2) Mr. Setyo Nugroho started his first-year doctoral program under the Taoyaka Program for creating a flexible, enduring, peaceful society, JSPS Program for Leading Graduate Schools.

(3) Mr. Atsushi Kokubo started his first-year master course, after finishing a one-year undergraduate course in our lab, affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering, Hiroshima University.

(4) Ms. Laura Wallnöfer came to our lab and will stay here for half a year as an exchange student in the Joint Master Program of Sustainable Development between four European universities and Hiroshima University.

• 2017.04.05: Prof. Zhang will co-organize the International Choice Modelling Conference (ICMC) in Kobe, Japan in the late summer of 2019, with Prof. Toshiyuki Yamamoto, Nagoya University, and Assoc. Prof. Nobuhiro Sanko, Kobe University.
  This was formally announced at the closing ceremony of the ICMC2017, Cape Town, South Africa.

• 2017.03.08: The International Workshop on Mobilities and Urban Policy “Domestic Migration and its Consequences: Comparisons between Japan and China” was held at IDEC, Hiroshima University. This is sponsored by two research funds: Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), JSPS (26303003: Trend of urbanization caused by rural migrant workers under the New China Urbanization Policy and its impacts on low-carbon urban development) and Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), JSPS (15H02271: Interdisciplinary research on policies promoting young people’s migration to and permanent residence in local cities). This workshop was also supported by the Committee of Infrastructure Planning and Management, Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE).

• 2016.12.05: The book “Life-oriented Behavioral Research for Urban Policy” was just published by Springer.

• 2016.09.09: 張峻屹教授は、東北大学で開催された土木計画学50周年関連行事の１つである全国大会研究討論会にて、”日本における研究環境＆新テーマの発掘”と題する講演を行った。発表用資料はこのページの最下部からダウンロードすることができる。
• 2016.08.07: The first TAOYAKA Program International Workshop, organized by the Program students, including David PEREZ BARBOSA, was just started! Our alumni, Dr. Masayuki Moriyama, CEO of VITALLead Co. Ltd., gave the first keynote speech.

• 2016.07.30: EASTS ISC Hand-off Meeting was held in IDEC. During this meeting, Prof. Zhang partially handed over his ATS and Awarding Subcommittee job to Prof. Hironori Kato, The University of Tokyo. The journal of ATS was established by EASTS in 2009. Since then, Prof. Zhang first worked as the associate editor of ATS and since 2011, he has been working as the editor-in-chief. During his term, he successfully invited a majority of editors-in-chief of major SCI/SSCI transportation journals to be advisory board members of the ATS and several researchers who are productive in writing SCI/SSCI papers. Currently, ATS has obtained a much better international reputation than before. Prof. Zhang will quit from this position in October, 2016.
• 2016.07.19: A Breakout Session #9 “Methods for Assessing Market Acceptance, Adoption, and Usage of AVs” at the Automated Vehicles Symposium 2016 was organized, where Prof. Zhang was a co-organizer. During this session, ownership and usage of automated vehicles (or self-driving vehicles) in the future were discussed from a behavioral perspective. 

1. • Related to this, a special issue on automated vehicles (or self-driving vehicles) at Transportation Research Part A was just announced before the symposium. 

• 2016.07.15: Prof. Zhang invited Prof. Yinhai Wang, University of Washington, to give a lecture on “Toward Smart and Connected Communities: Challenges and Opportunities in Transportation” at IDEC. This seminar was jointly organized as the 71th Taoyaka Seminar (The Leading Program, Hiroshima University), the 322th IDEC Seminar, and the ASMO Seminar as well as an International Seminar supported by Japan Society of Civil Engineers. Prof. Wang also served as an external reviewer of the doctoral dissertation examination committee for Ms. Ying JIANG.
• 2016.07.13: Prof. Zhang made a presentation titled “Young people’s migration behavior in Japan: An analysis based on the life-oriented approach” at a special session “Young People on the Move” in the WCTRS2016 Shanghai Conference. Since Prof. Zhang organized the workshop “Young People’s Life Choices and Travel Behavior” at TRB2016 in January 2016, this special session is the second international gathering to discuss young people’s travel behavior associated with life choices.
• 2016.07.11: Prof. Zhang chaired a session titled “Life Choice” in the WCTRS2016 Shanghai Conference. To my knowledge, this is the first time to have such a session on life choices in transportation conferences. Thus, the life-oriented approach has been attracting more and more attention from transportation researchers since the first workshop on the life-oriented approach in the IATBR2015 Conference.
• 2016.07.07: Prof. Zhang made a call for papers “A Life-oriented Approach to Understanding Young People’s Activity-Travel Behavior“, together with Dr. Juan Antonio Carrasco (Universidad de Concepción, Chile) and Dr. Karthik Konduri (University of Connecticut), to The Transportation Research Board (TRB) 96th Annual Meeting, Washington, D.C., January 8-12, 2017.
• 2016.06.30 ~ 07.03: Prof. Zhang attended the 10th International Association for China Planning (IACP) Conference in Beijing and presented a research on rural migrant workers’ job mobility and future settlement in Chinese cities.
• 2016.06.25 ~ 06.27: A joint seminar with The University of Tokyo was held in Shodo Island, Kagawa Prefecture. The island is famous for its olive products and the Angel Road, etc. B4, M2, D1, and D2 students joined the seminar and made presentations. This was also a good opportunity to experience regional revitalization issues and explore effective policies in the context of islands. 
• 2016.06.24: Our lab organized a tour to visit the Hiroshima Ujina Port, the A-City, and Koyo Newtown together with JDS students. Especially, major officers of Hiroshima City and Prefecture as well as their collaborative organizations kindly accepted us to visit the port area under the heavy rain condition. The Ujina Port is the 6th largest port in Japan in transporting passengers (by the way, the Miyajima port is the largest one in Japan: more than 8.000,000 passengers)
• 2016.06.01 ~ 06.04: Linghan Zhang attended the APTA Beijing Conference. APTA Conference is the largest tourism conference in the Asian and Pacific region.
• 2016.05.16~05.18: Prof. Zhang gave lectures at Beijing University, Beihang University, and Beijing Jiaotong University.

Graduation

2. 2015/09/30: One of my advised doctoral candidates, Ms. Yubing Xiong, was successfully awarded a doctor degree of engineering (Thesis title: Effects of Land Use and Transport on Quality of Life: A Life-oriented Behavioral Analysis).

1. 2015.01.22: Ms. Ying JIANG was awarded as the 2014 Hiroshima University Excellent Student Scholarship. She is expected to graduate (currently, a doctoral candidate) in September 2016. One more great gift!
2. 2014/09/11: The following paper was awarded as one of the Best Scientific Paper Awards by the 21st World Congress of Intelligent Transport Systems, Detroit, USA, September 7-11, 2014: A GPS-enabled Smart Phone App with Simplified Diagnosis Functions of Driving Safety and Warning Information Provision (Junyi ZHANG, Ying JIANG, Katsushi SASAKI, Masaki TSUBOUCHI, Takeshi MATSUSHITA, Toru KAWAI, Akimasa FUJIWARA).
3. 2014.01.22: Ms. Yubing XIONG was awarded as the 2013 Hiroshima University Excellent Student Scholarship, before her graduation in September 2015. A great gift!

1. “Life-oriented Behavioral Research for Urban Policy” will be soon published by Springer, edited by Prof. Junyi Zhang. This will be the first book about human behavior research from interdisciplinary perspective in the world. 
2. “Routledge Handbook of Transport in Asia” will be published in 2017, edited by Profs. Junyi Zhang and Cheng-Min Feng.
